Today’s #newbieTuesday post surrounds the critical choice of one’s Class/Role in the role playing game story. Your Class/Role determines what part you’re going to play in the party of other players throughout the role playing game campaign. An obvious example is the movie Ocean’s 11 where each member of the team has an obvious role…
We talked about character death a lot on last week’s #worldbuildingMondaypost. Today’s in some ways will be the opposite: taking the peaceful/diplomatic route to solve conflicts. RPGs have traditionally almost incentivized combat and violence by making those components fun & exciting. They add a wonderful thrill to many stories, justified violence or not. But worldbuilders…
Today’s #TBTRPG ongoing story comes from a recent campaign I’ve been playing with my brother Isaiah (JJ in StoryTogether’s Temple of Kings). We’re playing a 1:1 Star Wars story, heavily inspired by Knights of the Old Republic (KOTOR) with some Star Trek flair thrown in for good measure. Isaiah’s character is a Coruscant orphan, somehow…
Today’s #wildcardWednesday is all about role playing game accessories. The industry surrounding RPG accessories has exploded over the past 10 years. Typing in “RPG accessories” into Etsy as a small example will more than illustrate this point! Dice towers, weapons, miniatures, tables, map building software, pens, pencils, dice of all shapes and sizes, jewelry, books,…
We’re talking about skills on today’s #newbieTuesday post. Skills are oftentimes what your character is best at and, in most role playing stories, define the role/utility your character plays in the overall party/group. Think of the Fellowship in Lord of the Rings for example. Each of its nine members fights in a different style, with…
Today’s #worldbuildingMonday post is all about the death of your player characters. When you play role playing game stories, death should always be on the table. Bite a dragon’s tail as a level 1 whelp? You’re probably gonna die. Spit in Al Capone’s face while surrounded by his heavily-armed gang? You’re probably gonna die. But…
We’re focusing on Attributes on today’s #newbieTuesday post. Attributes are the main ways of measuring your character’s capabilities. In classic Dungeons & Dragons, the attributes are Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, and Charisma. You have scores in each of those attributes – the higher the score, the more adept you are in that attribute. Different…
Today’s #worldbuildingMonday post is all about battles. In worlds where there is a complex global political order, with many various factions/civilizations/nations/governments, and your players represent one (or even up to all!) of these parties, it can be an incredibly fun & engaging session to have a Risk/Total War-style game to slug it out in a…
We’re using today’s #GMAdvice post to make a surprise launch of our new series: GM Round Table. GM Round Table will be an ongoing series where we sit down with GMs and get a feel for their approach to playing stories, their sources of inspiration, how they invest in players, how they got started and…
Today’s #TBTRPG story is my favorite “good cop, bad cop” moment from any game I’ve played. We were in 1670 San Juan, under siege from a mysterious navy, just trying to steal a ship. Well, there was a beauty of a trade vessel sitting there on the docks, just waiting to be plucked. The only…
