Naming Your Character

Today’s #newbieTuesday post is some simple dos and don’t for new players about naming their characters.

Oftentimes when creating a new character in a tabletop role playing game for the first time, new players see the Name field to fill out and just freeze. I’ve seen it tons of times. “Oh no.” they think – and put far too much pressure on themselves to create a name. “Is this my identity?” “Do I have to answer to this name from now on?” “I can’t think of a name…” “I’m not creative!” etc. etc.

For new players, and especially folks that have never played a story before, choosing a name is simply not important in the grand scheme of things. Please do not put too much pressure on yourself on this step! You could be nameless, use your own name, use a random naming generator online…just don’t get too caught up on what it means to name your character.

I promise you: the far more important part of a tabletop role playing game is getting to play a story with your friends. Don’t sweat/overthink the naming or any aspect of character creation too much!

Just push through each step until you’re able to experience the flow of playing stories. And from there, you’ll get where our love of this game is coming from!
