Aragorn at Amon Sul

Today’s post comes from one of my favorite movies and story worlds: Lord of the Rings (again haha).

I found myself watching Fellowship of the Ring for the upteenth time with my wife, brother-in-law, and future sister-in-law, when I saw a frame I had never noticed before that is just too stunning to not share with you all: after Strider and the Hobbits reach Amon Sul, the ancient watchtower of Weathertop, as the Hobbits are settling in, the sun sets.

But, as it reaches the horizon and fills the area with a resplendent orange & yellow hue, the camera, zooms out where Amon Sul is framed against the sunset. There, on the right-hand most ledge of Weathertop, for no more than a second or two, you see Aragorn’s silhouette, his sword swaying lightly in the breeze.

It’s an absolutely gorgeous piece of cinematography and, despite my having seen this movie more times than I can count, something I had never seen before. Truly inspiring!
