Today’s #ifthiswereaTTRPG post comes from the end of a famous battle in a favorite anime of mine, Naruto Shippuden: Naruto vs. Pain. Spoilers ahead! For much of the Naruto Shippuden, Pain is painted as a great villain, someone with extraordinary powers who ruthlessly desires to crush everything in his way to become a god. And…
Today’s #ifthiswereaTTRPG is about the heist of the Bellagio Casino in Ocean’s Eleven. There are few films of the past 20 years that are more conducive to translating to a tabletop role playing game than Oceans Eleven. The group, led by Danny Ocean, comes together with a distinct plan – rob the Bellagio casino during…
Today’s #ifthiswereaTTRPG comes from, in my opinion of one at least, one of the greatest movies of the 20th century: It’s a Wonderful Life. It’s a Wonderful Life is an extraordinary film for many reasons, far too many to explore here. So today’s post will explore at a high-level the series of scenes where Clarence,…
Today’s #ifthiswereaTTRPG post comes from the Disney movie Mulan. At the army camp, Captain Li Shang puts a test to his clearly unfit-to-fight troop: using the heavy golden weights – “Discipline” and “Strength” – climb to the top of a high poll and retrieve the arrow at its top. Naturally, letting the weights be weights…
Today’s #ifthiswereaTTRPG post comes from one of my favorite movies: Apollo 13. As fascinating as it would be to see the entire film played out as a tabletop role playing game, today’s blog post comes from a critical moment not in space but back in Houston. There comes a moment in the movie when the…
Today’s #ifthiswereaTTRPG post is around a famous jump: Neo’s first attempted leap from skyscraper to skyscraper when he enters Morpheus’ training program. There are many important themes in The Matrix. But a critically important one is about the boundaries of our thoughts and feelings’ impact on the world around us and how re-imagining those limitations…
This week’s #ifthiswereaTTRPG post comes from another favorite Disney movie of mine: Hercules. Much of the beginning and middle of Hercules is dedicated to Hercules’ quest to become a “true hero” so he can regain his lost godhood. A journey of self-discovery, Hercules battles monsters and demi-gods alike throughout the Greek world, gaining fame, fortune,…
The previous two #ifthiswereaTTRPG posts dealt with characters who succeeded in their “rolls” – Frodo, and the President of Melcor – so today, we’re going to examine a famous failed roll from a favorite movie of mine: Toy Story. Those that love Toy Story know the scene well: Woody, consumed with jealousy and envy over…
I originally got the idea of #ifthiswereaTTRPG post series from the Star Trek: The Next Generation Season 4 episode “First Contact.” In the episode, the Enterprise crew is clandestinely evaluating whether a planet – which has just achieved warp drive – is ready to join the broader galactic community. Naturally, a slew of things go…
We kick off the first – hopefully of many! – of Wednesday’s #ifthiswereaTTRPG series with the critical inflection point in Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring at the Council of Elrond scene. This scene involves representatives of Middle Earth’s three major “good” civilizations, Elves, Dwarves, and Men, as well as Wizards and Rangers…
